This sounds a lot like Google Goggles. What’s the difference?
The main difference is that LinkApic is *customizable* and *democratic*. You have the power to add. As a result, every place could be searchable (if you are nice enough to add!), not just what Goggles has indexed (only landmarks, amongst places, at this time).
I just downloaded the app. How do I get started? How can I play around?
This is the beginning: other users may or may not have added tags to places for searching near where you are. We encourage you to be an active contributor to the imagewiki to reap the benefits. In the Add mode, snap pictures of places around you and provide tags/URLs to add. Then these would become searchable.
To simply play around with the functionality, try adding (in Add mode) tags to objects or “setup” around you. The tag will be permanently linked to whatever you snapped. You can then try searching by snapping pictures of the same object/setup. Enabling GPS is highly recommended.
Can I add and search for *things*, such as my backpack?
LinkApic is designed for places, but heck, go ahead and play around with it. Try it! Getting more technical, the system is designed to work for pictures with good details (smooth or blurry images may not work). Geometry is considered. Deformable objects won’t work.
Can I search at night? Does the lighting matter?
You can search anytime. The system is robust to lighting variations, up to some extent. Of course, you can always add a picture at any lighting condition, and search will get easier.
Is there an iPhone App coming?
We are working hard to make this right, first on one platform. We have an iPhone port in sight (and in the works). Do watch this space.
Where can I give feedback?
We’d absolutely love to hear from you! Just shoot an email to info{at}linkapic.com
